One Habitat

The project is located in Walthamstow Borough; this is one of the greenest boroughs in London. Therefore, there is an abundance of nature and different ecologies present. My project uses this as an opportunity to integrate bird ecology within my mixed use housing and, retail complex in Stanley Rd Car Park.

The population of Song Thrush birds has significantly decreased in London therefore, I have considered them as users in my proposal and, I have designed habitat walls for the birds which is integrated into my architectural design.

My aim is to allow humans and birds to co-exist and benefit each other. There are many benefits for humans to be in nature, one of them being the postive impact nature has on the mind. On the other hand Humans can benefit birds by providing them with compost and plants in an undisrupted environment.

Inspired by Luciano Pia's ‘25 Green’ and ‘Oldham's Walk’ by Donald Ball, I designed a multi layered housing and retail complex. The design includes layering of private and public spaces that are connected through balconies, paths and, staircases. There is a public green courtyard, green roofs and bird habitat walls designed as public social spaces.

The housing consists of five different typologies that I have tried to design inclusivley. The retail units are for local small businesses in Walthamstow. I have promoted the idea for a healthy eating business and restaurant to start up in the proposal. I have thought this through as a circular economy that will include allotments and composting which, will beneift residents, the economy and the birds.

The project is  designed sustainably through, the choice of materials and integration of existing nature and, new planned environmental and ecological concepts. The design was developed through environmental analysis and, takes adavntage of this as part of a sustaianle strategy.
